My
name is Nick Gardener....... father of 4, MD and now a Smurf (Assistant
Instructor) and license to kill..........Ok maybe not the last part.
Before we start, I can guarantee I have written and re-written this testimonial at least ten times to make sure it is a realistic account of Choi Kwang Do and just a little bit different than the others. I’m terrible with personal critical reviews/comments so just bear with me............
I originally went to a Choi Kwang Do class to support my 8 year old son and add some alternative personal fitness rather than joining the rat race in the gym.
My son has suffered some cruel jibes concerning his weight at school which, as a parent, caused some great concern and utter heartache. His confidence took a battering, as a consequence, he had behavioural issues which made him become increasingly angry and tantrums became a common occurrence
My Eldest Teenage son over heard us talking about Choi Kwang Do, tried it one week and joined after just one lesson. I believe we must educate our teenagers to deal with situations and be confident enough to defend themselves in awkward scenarios.
Real World scenarios-very important.
We have made our Choi Kwang Do classes a family activity and believe it's very important to have something in common with your children, and to make the effort to enjoy quality time together. This hobby has also helped us gain some exceptional like minded friends to socialise with including theme Park outings, BBQ’s and many a wine tasting evening!
Just for the record I am 41 (2011) and feel I am now getting fitter, mentally stronger and even getting more supple for an old fella! My personal working life as a Managing Director of a Medical Company obviously is extremely challenging and has helped me unwind and has become a fantastic stress buster!
I did some extensive background checks/research and found that it is based around proven modern scientific principles to improve:
Weight Loss and General Fitness
Self control and Discipline
Balance and Posture
Self Defence and Strength.
Yep, as a sceptic it sounded a little too good to be true and text book sales tactic..............Not on this occasion I am very pleased, if not surprised, to say the truth is there to be seen. I do not take fools lightly but this ‘Martial Art’ works without being unrealistic in what can be achieved for all individuals.
There are lots of other social benefits but when you find it is used practically in the US Army Infantry and Police, combined with an age group from 3-90+ years old this martial art is for you!
I decided that the three of us would make the commitment to join the Black Belt Club and pay a heavily discounted fee to achieve our 1st Dan (IL Dan) Black belt. The Black Belt Club means that all classes, Gradings, accessories and a beautiful red Dobok are paid for however long it takes us to achieve a Black Belt. Our Embroidered Black belts are now physically on display at every class we attend and I like to give it a gentle lucky stroke until I earn the right to wear it!
Choi Kwang Do is not like the TV series Kung Fu and you will not be called 'Grasshopper' (unless you want us to call you that), you will not do unrealistic 30 foot high spinning somersault high kicks and manage to attack an army single handedly. You will not find it in the Olympics or as a competitive sport. Historically, traditional martial arts have caused numerous long term injuries due to competiveness, punishing training regimes and over extending limbs and joints. Choi Kwang Do is a 'Way of Life' and what you will gain is confidence, flexible fitness and the ability to successfully defend yourself from any sized attacker. You will learn to free yourself from being held down, surprise attacks from behind and being assaulted with modern weapons. The power which can be generated from your own body using Choi Kwang Do techniques can be devastating.
I'll be honest....you will learn to seriously kick some ass if there is no other option.
There are some great video examples of Choi Kwang Do being used in demonstrations and training sessions around the world on U-tube.
Choi Kwang Do is for everyone. Ageless, classless and not limited by anyone's physical/medical abilities you will train and become good friends with people from all walks of life. As a student of Choi Kwang Do you can train anywhere around the world with people who follow the same principles, the respect for each other is very comforting and often lacking in today's society.
Make that Call..........Attend some free trial classes and see for yourself how we train, educate and promote realistic self defence with the added twist of fun! Classes are professionally instructed seven days a week and at multiple venues around Hampshire and of course, CRB checked.
Spectators and families are always welcome. The Smurf thing at the beginning is the Blue Dobok (uniform) awarded to assistant instructors who are always available to answer all questions and offer advice to everyone.
From the founder Grandmaster Kwang Jo Choi, Sabumnim Derek Bicknell and thousands of fellow students..............
