Joe Prescott281 viewsI started Choi Kwang Do in the early part of 2005, because my friend Liam Bicknell already was a black belt. I was apprehensive to start Choi Kwang Do because I had never done any martial arts before, so did not know what to expect. The class was not a big class when I first joined because it had just been set up but Sabumnim Derek Bicknell. After 4 months of enjoying Choi Kwang Do my mother Julie Prescott joined and we both enjoyed together. Now we both have our black belts and I'm fast approaching my second dan with my mum just behind. I am also an assistant instructor which means I can teach others, which has been great for my confidence when I am out and other aspects of life. Choi Kwang do has been great for me and I would recommend it for someone who wants to learn a martial art in a comfortable and relaxed manner.

Terry Chipperfield-harrison50 viewsMy Martial Arts background before Choi Kwang Do, was Judo, a full contact sport. I reached Black Belt 1st Dan and won many tournaments with Medals, Shields and Certificates to my name. But with Judo I also gained many broken bones, dislocated every finger and toe and from this sport over many years eroded the strength in my lower back. It made me wonder, was winning all those medals worth all the pain and agony!

Two years ago, I wanted my 5 year old son to find a Martial Art which could help him defend himself if he were attacked out there on the streets. Judo was my first thought, but luckily for him, my wife and myself, we found Choi Kwang Do.

Choi Kwang Do has been great for many reasons. The main reason, is as a hobby that the whole family can participate in, together. Choi Kwang Do has given our family fitness and has given each one of us confidence.

While practising Choi Kwang Do I have lost over a stone in weight, without dieting. My lower back has become stronger and only three years ago did I have an operation on my right knee, the operation was a failure and afterwards I still had severe pain when just walking upstairs. But thankfully over the past 18 months while practising Choi Kwang Do the pain has become less obvious with hardly any pain in everyday life.

Choi Kwang Do is not a full contact sport. Therefore, it experiences less injuries than many other Martial Arts. It has been adapted for the 21st Century which has appealed to me and gives you a much better understanding of what your body can cope with in everyday life. The dynamics of the Martial Art is formulated through our own body movement, so becomes a natural part of us.

I like the family attitude within Choi Kwang Do and the social side that it has to offer. My son at the age of six had progressed enough to join the Black Belt Academy which has enhanced the pride within our family. I am soon to be 50 years of age, but feel at least twenty years younger, indeed I am probably fitter than twenty years ago, all thanks to Choi Kwang Do.

I am now an Assistant Instructor and my main aim is to assist in the development of others, just as I and my family have already been ably assisted by the excellent leadership from the Instructors within Choi Kwang Do.

If you want to change your life or to feel positive about yourself, then do the one thing that will change your life, for the better. Give Choi Kwang Do some of your time. The saying goes, “You will get back, what you put in”, but with Choi Kwang Do, I personally believe you get back more, than what you put in.

If Choi Kwang Do finds you, then opportunity is knocking, so take that first step and grab that lifestyle you have always wanted. However, If you find Choi Kwang Do, you have already taken that first step, so congratulations. This is a wonderful opportunity for yourself and your family.

Steve Wells30 viewsThey say time flies when you are having fun and it only seems like yesterday that I started Choi Kwang Do with my son, both in White Belts, in September 2006.

In June 2009, I graded and received my IL Dan Black Belt in front of Master Brophy and a panel of Sabumnims. The grading was incredibly intense but enjoyable, as I felt that the teaching that I had been provided with gave me the necessary skills and confidence for the challenging but unique experience that is a Choi Kwang Do Black Belt grading; to demonstrate in just over an hour what you have learnt over the last three years.
That may seem pretty daunting, but with our training and support, I know its possible and achievable. Black Belt is just a step along the way, White Belt counts for more; its a start.

I'm proof that a Black Belt is a White belt who didn't quit. Come and learn something about yourself and make a positive step forward towards a more happier, fitter, confident, You.

Hope to see you in Class. Pil Suhng

Mark Child33 viewsAfter doing nothing for the last five years due to injury, and two knee operations. I decided enough was enough and thought I needed to do something to get myself back into shape.

Coming from a martial arts background before, I looked into new options. This is where i found Choi Kwang Do and started training in May 2009.

I have already found an increase in my fitness and flexibility plus with added bonus of no stress on my joints unlike some other traditional martial arts.

The classes are run in a friendly and family atmosphere under the expert guidance of Derek & Karen Bicknell.

Since being asked to become an A.I, it has given me a greater purpose in achieving my personal goal of gaining my black belt.
Also as an Assistant Instructor to help others reach their goals.

Paula Cooper26 viewsHello! This is me Paula Cooper (40) Mother, Wife, hairdresser and assistant instructor for Choi Kwang Do!
I joined Hampshire Choi Kwang Do in Oct 2008, totally by chance!! My children Ellen(13) and Harvey(12) were introduced by their step brother, Elliott Watson, and when he went off to university they needed me to take them to classes! I only knew a little about what they were doing and really thought it was one of those hobbies that children would start and it wouldn't be long till they would get fed up and start missing classes! But this wasn't happening, they were always full of the new and exciting techniques they had learned. So I found myself taxiing my children.
Whilst sitting and watching I was always surprised at how friendly the members of the class were and all different ages. It wasn't long before I wanted to join in! I love having a interest in which my children are a part off. It's lovely to have a form of exercise that is challenging to the mind and body, which is always changing and is so much fun! I'm still amazed that I'm actually doing a marital art and I'm on my journey which will take me to becoming a black belt!
Amazing!!!! !

Tim Walden25 viewsTwo years ago, when I first ventured in to the world of CKD, it was with the hope that I could get fitter and have fun, enjoying a new hobby/experience. Has CKD met my hopes and expectations...? Yes, and somewhat more! I am now of an age where it would easy to be quarantined as a senior citizen. To be able to meet and train with all ages from five years of age and upwards is so life enhancing. One of the youngsters with whom it is my pleasure to train is my seven year old grandson Dylan and that says it all about the family nature of CKD.
Now after two years I can look back to the start when everything was unknown and seemingly difficult and realise how much I have learned, how much I have gained from the patient tuition and encouragement from every instructor I have come across. How do I measure that progress? Certainly a natural progression through the grades to my current purple belt and recently donning the blue uniform of assistant instructor is one assessment. Another is more quirky but just as satisfying to me as a measure of good health; when I drop a bar of soap in the shower mostly I catch it! To achieve that requires awareness, speed of reaction, good peripheral vision, muscle control - very satisfying.
If you are like me and have seen many days do give CKD a try because I know of nothing better to help keep an alert mind and a healthy body. For the young – what an opportunity, which if grasped, will give you all the confidence you need to face the trials and tribulations of life.

Alexandra Hansler72 viewsWell, if someone had said to me this time last year, that in a years time you will be working your way through your colour belts heading towards a Black Belt in the best martial art ever and on top of that, had been asked to become and Assistant Instructor. I would never have believed them.
But fortunately for me, it’s was true.
I joined Hampshire CKD in early 2009 and I have loved every minute of it. I have always been interested in Martial Arts, ever since I was young and coming from a dance background and a very sporty family, I couldn’t wait to try out a Martial Art and gain a Black Belt. But due to lack of self confidence, it took me a while to attend any classes. But I eventually started a form of Kung Fu in 2008, but after a few months I just didn’t get that feeling. Also with being one of the only girls in the room, I felt a little bit intimidated. I didn’t feel like I was learning how to defend myself, only how to win at competitions. So I ended up leaving.
The following year while training at the gym, I found a Martial Art called ‘Choi Kwang Do’. Again it took me a while to phone and book my first lesson, but I did. I was so nervous doing my first class, but I was greeted with the biggest smile from Sabumnim Bicknell, she was so lovely and welcoming I had not even notice my nerves had gone. After coming out from my first class I knew that there was something different about it, I had that feeling (and the huge grin on my face was a bit of a give away ;o) ). I couldn’t stop talking about it to my parents all weekend, ever since then I have been training all over I even took a trip to Woking to train with Master Brophy one of the highest Dans in the country, that was amazing, I’ve also attended Ladies only classes and fun days too.
In early 2010, I was asked if I would like to join the A.I team (Assistant Instructor) I was over the moon. So without a second thought I said ‘Yes Please!’. A lot of people and even some students have asked me the same question ‘Why did you want to become an Assistant Instructor’ and I answered the same thing everytime ‘Because I believe in Choi Kwang Do’
Most of them look puzzled so I explained, Choi Kwang Do is a practical self defence, it works with biomechanics of the body. But it doesn’t just teach you how to defend yourself, it also teaches you compassion, self control, confidence and in a family and friendly environment you will feel at home.
Already my confidence, flexibility, stamina and strength have improved greatly!!!! So becoming an Assistant Instructor I am able to teach other’s the art of Choi and help them to develop their skill’s and spread the
‘Pil Suhng Spirit’
So thank you so much to The Bicknell Family! And bring on the Black Belt!!! , Pil Suhng!
